Attention-Worthy: Volume VI
On Costa Rican adventures, removing "flattery" from our vocabularies, and calling our representatives
Hi! Welcome to this March edition of Attention-Worthy. Spring is imminent, and it’s got me feeling hopeful. In this digest, I transfer attention to members of my network and community by shining the spotlight on their work. The next edition will go out on April 10, 2025. If you have something you’d like to promote, hit reply and send me the link. (Anything goes! An article you wrote, a painting you did, a poem you wrote. I want my community to experience it too.)

Whenever I have a client inquiry call, I’m always assessing whether the person on the end of the line is ready for PR or not. Oftentimes, the people I’m chatting with are wondering the very same thing. So when I saw N. Chloé’s newsletter about how you can know for sure whether you need PR or not, I had to share it.
I’ve included a short excerpt below.
“Like with the aforementioned masseuse, a PR firm’s skill set, even their network, is structured for something very specific.
The spread of information.
PR is not structured to spread behavior change or activate new beliefs.
And don’t get me wrong, PR can absolutely assist in the spreading of behavior or belief change.
Afterall, it’s absolutely crucial that people know climate change is an issue and why.
But that information alone isn’t what will activate local, domestic or global change.”
If you’re wondering, “Ok, then what will?” I highly recommend you go read the full post.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with a group of stylists who are in my friend, Nicole Otchy’s, Mini Mind group.
One of the stylists I met, Gab Saper, has a Substack, Millennial Deprogramming, that hits all the right notes for me.
Here’s a quick blurb of what you can expect: “Guiding millennial women to build wardrobes that reveal their coolest, hottest, best selves and deprogram them from society's bullsh*t, fashion rules, body shaming and other garbage. Written by a personal stylist who loves horizontal stripes.”
Might I recommend starting with this post about how we need to eliminate the word “flattering” from our vocabularies?

Given my work as a publicist, I’m always looking to connect with experts in the public speaking sphere, and I hit gold this quarter.
Thanks to
, I connected with Evolve Benton who has a locked-in system for helping speakers that come from under-recognized communities get paid to speak. Their free speaking calculator (with opt-in) is an invaluable tool, and I highly recommend checking their 5-Day Challenge or their Profitable Speakers Circle out.Mahlena-Rae Johnson, whom I met through Susan Hyatt, is a presentation coach for introverted CEOs in edtech. If you are that person or know anyone who fits that description, send them Mahlena’s way. You can find her on LinkedIn here.

Today is the start of Dr. Michelle Mazur’s Make Marketing Suck Less event! It was designed to give you alternatives to marketing on social media. Here are some of the takeaways you might experience:
“Ditch all the marketing "shoulds" that keep you hiding in plain sight from the clients who need to hire you
Grow your email list without pressure to post on social media, run ads, or do Reels (ugh..Reels)
Spend less time marketing & go back to doing what you love (working with your clients or anything else)
Discover the exact right words that make your clients excited to say yes to working with you
(without feeling like Scammy McScammerson)”
And guess what? I’m one of the 10 speakers who will be participating :)

In prep for an essay that is coming your way this week (on the death of mentorship in our industry), I read
’s book Modern Friendship. Her Substack post, 24 Ways to Supercharge Your Friendships, is a helpful representation of her advice from the book.
Here are a couple of my favorites:
“Remove uncertainty in all communication. Say, “No need to respond. Just tap a heart to let me know you’ve seen my message. Love you!” Or, “If I don’t hear back from you by noon, I’ll assume it’s a pass.”
Introduce your friends to one another. Explain why they will each benefit from the connection.”

Over the last month, I published a series on healing our relationships to visibility and to our voices. It’s full of wisdom and joy, and I highly encourage to click at least one of the links below, whichever calls to you first:

I recently talked to a friend who calls her representatives damn near every day. I shared with her how I was hesitant about calling mine, and she reinforced a recommendation that I had received to use the app 5 Calls.
If it’s helpful, here are some tips she shared with me:
People in her area don’t answer their phones, so she ends up leaving lots of voicemails.
She always personalizes the script that 5 Calls offers. So, when I called, I said, “I’m a small business owner and a parent in the Spokane area.”
She calls when it works for her schedule, so right when she’s getting ready in the morning.

Evolve Benton generously introduced me to Doctor Jon Paul who has a book coming out on March 25, 2025 that I’m very excited about.
It’s called Black. Fat. Femme.: Revealing the Power of Visibly Queer Voices in Media and Learning to Love Yourself.
Here’s a short description:
“In Black. Fat. Femme: Revealing the Power of Visibly Queer Voices (in Media) and Learning to Love Yourself, educator and media critic Dr. Jonathan P. Higgins―aka Doctor Jon Paul―delivers an honest and extraordinary new take on how the author, and other Black Fat Femmes like them, have come to find and understand their identity.”

Thanks to my involvement in
’s group, FEO, I had a wonderful coffee chat with .Heather is a transformational success coach with a slew of certifications: everything from NLP to hypnotherapy and human design.
Beyond being a podcast co-host on this hilarious show, Was It Chance?, she’s also planning a retreat to Costa Rica for January 2026 that looks dreamy. Keywords that draw me in include: forest bathing, sound healing, and beach dinner party. Keywords not listed that I know will be included and that I would appreciate are: running away to a comfy bed next to a beach with no parental responsibilities.
If you’re not quite ready to commit to a Costa Rican adventure, you can get a taste of her work by joining The Spark Collective, which is an “on-demand space for self-discovery, growth, and embodied joy. With intuitive journal prompts and a rich content library filled with guided meditations, EFT tapping, subliminal audios, quick-win mini-courses, and more, you’ll ignite your intuition, boost self-awareness, and let your authentic self shine effortlessly.”
You can learn more about it here.
